Court of Alderney

The Island of Alderney has a modern judicial system administered by the Chairman and Jurats of the Court of Alderney. The Jurats are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of the Bailiwick of Guernsey and are members of the Island community. They are not legally qualified. The Greffier is the legal adviser.

The Court has unlimited civil powers and, in relation to criminal matters, can sentence offenders to a maximum of 12 months imprisonment and/or £10,000 fine. The Civil Court sits every Thursday at 2.30 pm (excluding August) and the Police Court sits on the first Thursday of every month at 10.00 am.

The Civil Court

The Civil Court deals with all matters that do not appear in the Police Court.

Small Claims

The Small Claim limit is £2,500.

If you wish to take action to recover a debt up to that amount, you are required to send a letter to the person owing the debt requesting payment or court action will follow. You must allow at least seven days to elapse before requesting a summons be issued.

If you do not receive payment, send a copy of the letter to us (address below) with a cheque for £50 requesting that a summons be issued. You must tell us what day you wish to attend Court. The letter and cheque need to be received by preceding Friday of the date you wish to attend Court.
