2006 - 2007 - Great Britons

The States of Alderney have issued coins, in conjunction with Guernsey and Jersey, in order to celebrate Great Britons.

The definition of a Great Briton obviously varies according to individual preference. However, this collection has aimed to select individuals who have contributed from different fields of society, including the Arts, Literature, Politics, Engineering and the British Royalty. Included on each of the £5 designs (available in Gold, Silver or Cupro-Nickel) is a small symbol representing the individual area of excellence. A further small gold £1 coin is also available.

This unique collection immortalises some of the most well known ``Great Britons``. Featured Great Britons include Queen Elizabeth I; Sir Isaac Newton; William Shakespeare; Charles Dickens; Captain James Cook; Sir Edward Elgar; Sir Francis Drake and John Constable.

The coins have been designed by Danuta Solowiej- Wedderburn.

The obverse of the coins depict a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, by Raphael Maklouf, surrounded by the inscription Elizabeth II Alderney.

Availability of these coins is now limited to "Charles Dickens", "Queen Elizabeth I" and "William Shakespeare" in £5 Cupro-Nickel.
