2014 - 70th Anniversary of D-Day

70th Anniversary of D-Day

6th June 2014 marks the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings, an operation that is widely believed to be the turning point of the Second World War.

This coin is issued in recognition of all those that fought, many of whom never had the opportunity to return home to their families.

The design is taken from the soldiers point of view.  It depicts 2 soldiers wading through the shallows from their landing craft to the fortified beaches ahead.  The background shows German artillery creating splashes in the water and the infamous Czech hedgehogs.  The coin also incorporates the names of the Normandy beaches, along with Pointe du Hoc, the operation prior to the main attack to destroy the German cannon placement.

The obverse of the coin depicts an image of Her Majesty the Queen by Ian Rank- Broadley FRBS.
