The Island of Alderney has a modern judicial system administered by the Chairman and Jurats of the Court of Alderney. The Jurats are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of the Bailiwick of Guernsey and are members of the Island community. They are not legally qualified and the Court is provided with legal advice by the Greffier, who is a public servant.
The Court of Alderney has unlimited civil powers .The Civil Court deals with all matters that do not appear in the Police Court. The Civil Court sits every Thursday at 2.30 pm (excluding August). The Court is usually open for the public and the Press to attend, with the exception of domestic matters.
