Press Release - Fisheries Management Agreement

For immediate release: 26th July 2016

A briefing was held in Alderney today, Tuesday 26 June, from officials from the States of Guernsey following the UK High Court decision last Friday.

The States of Alderney are disappointed at the decision of the High Court in relation to the suspension of the Fisheries Management Agreement.  We stand ready to work closely with the other islands in the Bailiwick on the response to this decision.

Robert McDowall, Chairman of the Policy and Finance Committee said: "I am grateful for the timely briefing.  Whilst I am disappointed I firmly believe that it was right that the Islands made a stand and did what they can to defend the rights of the local fishing industry.   Fishing is important to the entire Bailiwick for many reasons but its place in Alderney's economy is greater due to its comparative scale.  I recognise that the issues around Brexit will mean this is likely to become an important part of the discussions that we will hold with the UK Government in the months that lie ahead."

The handling of these discussions following the UK Court decision will be put on the agenda for the September meeting of the Policy & Finance Committee.
