Press Release - States of Alderney Meeting with Guernsey Deputy Barry Paint re Fisheries Issues

For immediate release: 8th March 2019

A meeting between Members of the States of Alderney and Guernsey Deputy Barry Paint has helped to clarify future implications of the extension of the 12 mile territorial limit for Guernsey fishermen. The meeting was able to agree that there won't be any immediate or unilateral changes to the traditional fishing rights of Guernsey fishermen which will continue when the 12-mile extension comes into force. Alderney's immediate priority will be to work with the States of Guernsey to ensure that the rights of all Bailiwick fishermen are protected.

The meeting also discussed a range of issues around the sustainable management of fish stocks, and access to French markets for Alderney and Guernsey fishermen. In order to gain a greater understanding of regional issues, the States of Alderney will be sending a political observer and fisherman's representative to the Channel Potting Conference. This is to be held this year on 28th and 29th March in Ploescat, Roscoff, Brittany.

Alderney Representatives in the States of Guernsey, Alex Snowdon and Steve Roberts, suggested that Deputy Paint should be invited to the meeting in Alderney after they met States of Deliberation members in January.
