Press Release - Homecoming Day

Homecoming Bank Holiday

At its January meeting Policy and Finance considered a proposal with regards changing the way in which the public holiday "Homecoming Day" on the 15th December is commemorated.

The original proposal that was put forward to the States in November 2005 was for the 15th December to be an annual public holiday, unless the 15th December fell on a Saturday or Sunday. In this circumstance the Saturday and Sunday would not be a public holiday and provision was made that the Monday first preceding that day would be a public holiday; Ordinance of the States of Alderney XI of 2005.

The proposal that was tabled in January 2020 requested that the actual day of the return of the Islanders i.e. the 15th December is the official day of remembrance and for only this day to be set aside as a public holiday.

Before this item is discussed in the full States, it was considered that public opinion on this proposal should be sought. The consultation period commences today for a four week period i.e. until Friday 6th March 2020. If you wish to comment please send your views by email to or by letter addressed to the Chief Executive, States of Alderney.
