Islanders making their views known for Alderney's future

More than 200 people have provided their views on the way ahead for Alderney in the first week of the Island Plan 2021 survey - around 10% of the population.

The survey, launched on October 15th, gives everyone with an interest in Alderney's future a chance to help formulate a new strategic plan.
There's a little over two weeks for more people to take part in the survey which closes for public consultation on November 8th.

States Member Ian Carter reported the initial success to the States of Alderney meeting on Wednesday (October 20th) and revealed he will discuss the Plan's proposed contents with Deputy Mark Helyar, Guernsey's Policy & Resources Treasury lead, soon after the consultation period ends.

"We're delighted with the response and thank everyone who has taken the time to complete either the online survey or the hard copy that is available from the Island Hall," said Mr Carter. "Asking for people's views and ideas is the easy part, taking action following their feedback is more difficult. But we are determined to take the steps necessary to achieve greater prosperity and wellbeing for the people who live and work here."

He said a working group had looked at previous island plans and asked why they had not come to fruition, concluding that they were either too ambitious or too general.

This survey covers six key themes - Economy, Energy, Accessibility and Connectivity, Community, Environment and Governance - each with a number of goals which people are asked to prioritise and then provide their own suggestions.

"The aim of the plan is to make sure we focus on delivering the right priorities for Alderney," added Mr Carter. "We won't be able to do everything at once - that would be unrealistic - but with a set of priorities for the next three to five years we can align our resources with those and make a difference."
