'We understand the horror of occupation' Alderney backs Ukraine support measures

As a constituent part of the Bailiwick, The States of Alderney is fully supportive of the £500,000 Bailiwick's commitment to the people of Ukraine and is looking at ways of providing additional help.

The donation reflects the strength of local feeling and solidarity for Ukraine and its people whose sovereignty and safety are threatened by Russia waging an unjust war in their country, and is fully supported by the States of Alderney.

States Members and the Alderney Civil Service are discussing additional support measures of a more tangible nature which would reflect the strength of feeling on the island.

While these discussions are taking place, individuals and businesses on Alderney are pointed to the Disasters Emergency Committee (dec.org.uk), which brings together leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently, as a first port of call. Any donation made in this way would also be matched pound for pound by the U.K. Government up to £20 million.

"The resistance put up by the people of Ukraine in the face of this heart-breaking invasion of their homeland is inspirational and deserves all the support we can muster," said P&F Deputy Chairman Ian Carter. "We know that many private and public bodies across the Bailiwick are stepping up individually and it is only right that we show our support collectively.

"As an island that was evacuated during World War II and saw many lives lost, some of whom were Ukrainians, during its occupation, Alderney stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The Channel Islands understand the horror of occupation."

Further work has also been undertaken over the last week to ensure the Bailiwick does all it can to support the response by the UK Government, including making various Regulations to reflect the UK government's position regarding the imposition of additional sanction measures on named Russians and their interests, and through financial sanctions, export restrictions and a ban on access to the airspace and ports by planes and ships.
