Information Each department is responsible for day-to-day administration and delivering services in the community.

  • Chief Executive Office

    • The Chief Executive is the head of the Alderney Civil Service and accountable to the States for the provision of operational oversight to the Transferred Services provided in Alderney by the States of Guernsey and delivered by Guernsey Civil and Public Servants.

    • They are the senior advisor to the Government of Alderney, providing the executive lead in relation to Alderney's relations with the States of Guernsey, the UK Government (principally, the Ministry of Justice); French national and local government and various non-governmental organisations.

  • Economic Development

    • The Department of Economic Development is responsible for research and development of variables, products and methodologies that will stabilise and grow Alderney's economy.

    • The ultimate goal is to achieve Economic Reward by utilising and marketing the businesses, industry, infrastructure, online potential the island possesses and expanding and increasing reliability of our transport connectivity.

    • The General Office is located on the ground floor of the Island Hall and deals with:

      • Water Board account queries and payments

      • Dog Licences

      • Income Tax queries, payments and provision of forms

      • Social Security queries, payments and provision of forms

      • Leaflets and advice regarding Social Security benefits

      • Specialist Medical treatment travel bookings

      • Cadastre / Tax on Real Property (TRP) queries and payments

      • Vehicle Registration 

      • Vehicle Import Licences

      • Driving Licence applications and queries

    • Staff are also available to direct you to the appropriate offices for other States related queries.

  • Harbour Office

    • The Harbour Office is responsible for the administration and operation of Braye Harbour as well as other maritime activities.

    • The key services are:

      • To provide commercial port facilities for the use of sea passengers and freight.

      • To provide berthing and handling facilities for the local fishing fleet.

      • To provide berthing and marina facilities for local and visiting yachtsmen.

      • Licensing and control of commercial vessels in local waters.

  • Planning

    • The Planning Department's primary function is to determine planning applications in accordance with the provision of the Planning Law and Policy Guidelines, and the aims and policies of the Land Use Plan.

    • Services of the Planning Department include: 

      • Processing of planning applications, including applications related to Historic Buildings, and dealing with related matters.

      • Provision of advice and information to the public and others regarding development control matters.

      • Investigation and enforcement action in relation to contraventions of the planning laws.

    • Planning Department now operates an appointment only visitation service and endeavour to answer all enquiries online wherever possible.

  • Presidents Office

    • The President's Office is responsible for the following: 

      • Production and issue of the Billet D'Etat, Deliberations and Hansard Reports

      • Dealing with Members of the Public and other Government offices

      • Organising civic and social events including Vin d'Honneurs and visits by dignitaries

    • Nominations for UK National Honours
      Nominations should be forwarded to president.secretary@gov.gg in the first instance. The President will forward the nomination with his support to the Lt Governor in Guernsey, who in turn will forward it to the Cabinet Office with his support. 

    • Congratulations from The Queen
      Please advise the President's Office with plenty of advance notice, of any friends or family members who are due to reach their 100th Birthday or Diamond Wedding Anniversary. A birth or marriage certificate will be required to verify the dates. The information is then passed to the Lt Governor's office in Guernsey who then forward the request to the Palace.

  • States Works 

    • States Works is responsible for maintenance of the island's infrastructure including: water; sewage; waste and recycling, agriculture; planning; and building control. It provides general contracting and maintenance services to the States of Alderney, using the skills and expertise of the predominantly manual workforce and specialist vehicles and equipment.

  • Tourism & Marketing

    • The Tourism & Marketing Department deals with all matters relating to Tourism, Marketing and PR for the States of Alderney.

    • Marketing Mission Statement
      To market the island as a tourist destination. To efficiently achieve this within the remit of the allocated budget, using the most cost-effective marketing tools, such as, press relations, namely press visits, editorial, advertising, advertorial, event supports, exhibitions, brochures, literature, e-marketing, website and social media.

  • Treasury

    • The Treasury Department is primarily responsible for the day to day running of the financial aspects of the Islands administration including some aspects of the transferred services. 

    • Responsibilities include:

      • States of Alderney annual Budgets and Accounts

      • Finance and Administration, including supplier payments and customer invoicing

      • Committee/ Trust Work

      • Staff Payroll

      • Personnel

      • States Corporate Insurance

      • Commemorative Coinage

      • Social Security Department (Guernsey)

      • Other States of Guernsey Departments

      • States Commissions and Companies

      • General Administration

  • Water Board

    • The States Water Board oversees the collection, storage, treatment and distribution of potable (drinkable) water to the Island's 2,000 customers.

    • Operating as a commercial trading board, the profits of the Water Board are reinvested into the system in order to safeguard the island's water resources and the team works around the clock to maintain the highest levels of quality. Stringent quality control is carried out daily and water samples are sent off island for analysis weekly.

    • The water supply is generated from a number of streams and bore holes and is stored at the Battery Quarry and Corblets Quarry.
