Grants & Support

On this page you will find information on grants and support available from the States of Alderney. 

  • Small Business Grant

    • Grants of up to £2000 are available to help anyone living in Alderney and wishing to start a successful business in the island.

    • To apply you must complete pdf icon Small Business Start Up Grant Application Form [229kb] also available on the download section of this page, or in person from the General Office. 

    • Please return the completed form in person or via email to Economic Development at the General Office.

    • This grant is available to:

      • Individuals looking to start a business in Alderney

      • Businesses already located on island that have been running for less than six months

    • Applicants could receive a maximum grant of £2000 to contribute towards up to 50% of the total eligible cost of the project.

    • You will also need to submit:

      • A business plan

      • A 12-month cash flow forecast and profit & loss

      • Three written quotes for any single item costing over £2,000

  • Standard Grant Criteria

    • The States of Alderney support the local voluntary and community sector by the award of a Standard Grant to organisations or through a contribution to charitable events.

    • Please return the completed form via email to Treasury, or in person to the General Office marked for the attention of Treasury.

    • Agreement will be subject to consideration of criteria set out below and approval by:

      • Policy and Finance Committee - for general grants over £5,000

      • Finance Committee - for general grants from £1,000 to £5,000

      • Committee for Tourism and Economic Development - for support to events within the Committee remit

      • The States Treasurer/ Head of Finance - for minor grants and fee waivers below £1,000

    • Organisations
      Applications will normally only be considered from organisations that:

      • Are properly constituted voluntary or charitable organisations

      • Are not wholly reliant on support from the States of Alderney

      •  Involve support from volunteers

      • Can demonstrate financial need

      •  Adhere to relevant legislation

    • Projects & Events
      Applications will normally only be considered towards projects and events that contribute to one of the following States of Alderney priorities:

      • Are properly constituted voluntary or charitable organisations

      • Employment for local people

      • Supporting vulnerable people

      • Delivering direct benefit to residents

      • Encouraging tourism

      • Involving people in improving island life

      • Delivering or supporting any other agreed objectives relevant at the time

    • What will NOT be considered?
      Applications will not normally be considered in the following circumstances:

      • To fund non-educational individuals or trips

      • In respect of religious or political activities

      • Where the organisation holds free reserves which cover 12 months operational expenditure

      • Retrospectively where event or expenditure has already been incurred

      • Where more appropriately funded by other agencies. eg: HSSD, Education

      • To purchase vehicles unless a community use vehicle

      • For a new organisation requesting a grant over £2,000

    • Disclosure
      Applicants are advised that all grant awards over £1,000 will be disclosed in public committee minutes and as a note to the States accounts.

      • How many visitors are expected and how much are they expected to spend?

      • What media plans are there?

      • Is the event likely to stimulate repeat visitors?

    • The Application Process
      The application process for support to an organisation requires the applicant to state:

    • 1.   Aims and Objectives of the organisation;

      2.   What support is being requested (eg: amount of grant or fee waiver)?

      4.  What other financial contributions are available or being requested?

      5.  How exactly will the grant be used;

      6.  Events applicants will follow a separate process to also demonstrate:

      • How many visitors are expected and how much are they expected to spend?

      • What media plans are there?

      • Is the event likely to stimulate repeat visitors?

    • The process will be annual for the year in question only.  Support in a subsequent year will be subject to the same considerations.

      Information to be provided in support of application:
      All grant requests over £1000 will be required to provide:

      1.   Evidence that the organisation is properly constituted

      2.  Most recent accounts including Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet;

      3.   Forecast accounts for current year and following year where available.

      Grants over £5000 will be required to provide:

      1.   Evidence that the organisation is properly constituted;

      2.  Previous year accounts including Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet;

      3.   Forecast accounts for the current year;

      5.   Summary of structure or lead roles in organisation.

      Grants over £5000
      Grants over £5000 will be released in tranches and will be subject to a Service Agreement between the States of Alderney and the recipient. This agreement will cover:

      1.   Aims and objectives of the recipient organisation;

      2.  The purpose of the grant;

      3.   How award of a grant contributes to States priorities at the time;

      4.   Amount of grant;

      5.   Timing of payment in tranches;

      6.  Arrangements for repayment in the event of non-performance;

      7.   Information to be provided including:

      • Six monthly management accounts;

      • Evidence of proper governance arrangements

      • Agreed key performance indicators (KPIs)

    • 8.  Any conditions imposed by the States of Alderney.

    • Grant assurance statements
      At the end of the year, a standard Grant Assurance Statement (which is included on the Grant Application form) will be requested by the States of Alderney to enable all grant recipients over £1,000 to demonstrate how the funding has been used so that the benefits to the community can be evaluated by the States.

  • Tourism Event Grant

    • The Tourism & Event Grant Fund aims to provide financial support to events and festivals taking place on Alderney. Applications from non-profit organisations or charities who use their event to benefit the island and provide a backdrop for visitors to Alderney will be considered. The islands economy will be at the forefront of the decision making process, evidence of the events contribution to this should be included in the application form.

    • Please return the completed form in person or via email to Tourism & Marketing at the Visitor Information Centre.

  • Waiver of Fees for use of Island Hall and Associated Rooms

    • In 2017, the Finance Committee agreed to introduce a concession for usage of the Island Hall and Anne French Room for all registered Charities & Non Profit Organisations.

    • Organisations are welcome to apply annually for a waiver of Island Hall fees by way of a Grant Application when usage is primarily for fundraising events such as jumble sales, bingo evenings etc.

    • Please note: All bookings for the Island Hall and Anne French Room will still be subject to the usual booking procedure with the Island Hall caretaker.
