Alderney advised to prepare for Storm Ciaran

Based on latest forecasts, which are being reviewed regularly, severe weather is due to arrive on Wednesday with the worst of the storm predicted to hit in the early hours of Thursday morning. Significant disruption is expected during these times. With predicted winds of up to 95mph, islanders are being advised to stay at home and not travel unless essential.

States of Alderney information on key areas is as follows:

Education - St Anne's School will be closed on Thursday. St Anne's Pre School will also be closed on that day. Hummingbees Day Nursery may open with restricted hours for those whom childcare provision is essential. Updates will be provided to parents/ carers by providers if necessary.

Traffic - Police will continuously assess road safety conditions. If conditions deteriorate, road closures may be made without notice in order to safeguard the public. From 06.00am until 12.00pm on Thursday 2nd the eastern section of the Rue de Beaumont will be closed. St. Annes Church Car Park will also be closed all day Thursday.

Waste collection - Refuse and recyling collection is postponed from Thursday 2nd November until Friday 3rd November. Likewise the impot and recycling centre will be closed on Thursday 2nd. Services will be reviewed on Friday pending further weather information.

If your property is prone to flooding, sand bags are available from States Works.

The Island Hall will be closed to the public.

Health and Social Care - The Mignot Memorial Hospital team have more staff on stand-by as patient transfers by helicopter and sea will be very unlikely during the intense part of the storm. The majority of its services will continue to function.

Air travellers are advised to expect disruption to services over the coming days. Passengers should check with their airline in the first instance.

Alderney Airport is expected to operate as normal on Wednesday 1 November 2023 however will close all day on Thursday 2 November 2023 and is expected to open at 1000hrs on Friday 3 November 2023.

Harbour - The commercial quay will be closed to members of the public from 1700 Tuesday 31 October, until conditions moderate. During hours of closure, access will be restricted to essential personnel and the owners of vessels moored on the quayside. These measures will be reviewed daily following regular assessment of the weather forecast.

Access to the Alderney Breakwater will be closed to public access on Wednesday at 1700hrs.

Access to the Little Crabby Harbour will be partially restricted.

Boat owners are advised to ensures their vessels are tightly moored with hatches and covers secured and bilge pumps operating.

Property Residents should make sure their properties are secure, including garden furniture and other outside fixtures. Islanders are asked to clear drains outside their properties to help limit flooding.

Animal owners are advised to keep their animals inside wherever possible during the peak times of the storm.
