Your States Members
There are no political parties in Alderney. Government is carried out by the States of Alderney (the legislature) which consists of a President and ten States Members.
Each States Member holds office for a period of four years. Every two years five of the sitting members stand for re-election. Thus continuity at all levels is maintained and represents a stable, experienced parliamentary body.

Guernsey Representatives
Alderney has two seats with voting rights on the States of Guernsey monthly Deliberation meetings with the aim of representing Alderney taxpayers in Guernsey decisions. Your elected two members are:
Declaration of Interests
Every year, during the month of May, all States Members are required to submit an up to date Declaration of Interests to HM Greffier.

The
Code of Conduct [323kb] sets out what is expected of the States Members and how allegations of poor conduct can be investigated.
If you wish to make a complaint alleging a breach of the Code of Conduct by a States Member you must write to the President setting out the allegation and enclosing any supporting evidence.
Unsubstantiated allegations will not be considered by the Chairman of the Panel. Complainants are required to supply the Chairman of the Panel with supporting evidence and a complaint founded only upon a media report will not normally be treated as a substantiated allegation. Anonymous complaints will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.Judgements

States Members Pay
States Members receive allowances of £9,629 each per year. The two representing Alderney in the States of Guernsey receive an additional £20,629 each.

How to engage with States Members
Members of the public can engage with States Members and access States information in a variety of ways.
States Members Drop-in Sessions
On Fridays, between 11:30 - 13:30, in the Members Room - opposite the General Office, at the Island Hall, members of the public have the opportunity to meet with States Members on a 1:1 basis.Personal contact:
Members of the public are welcome to meet with individual members on a 1:1 basis to discuss issues within the published areas of responsibility.People's Meeting:
The monthly People's Meeting allows engagement on two levels:
i. Formal discussion on items due to be debated at the next States meeting. This takes place one week before the States meeting and items to be discussed are published in the Billet D'Etat.
ii. A wider ranging discussion on issues of importance to the public. From July 2014, this is on a trial basis where written questions are invited in advance for a detailed response in Part 2 of the People's Meeting. The deadline is noon the Friday before the People's Meeting on the following Wednesday.

Please be aware that when considering whether a candidate is 'ordinarily resident' for the purpose of becoming an elected representative the following factors will be taken into account:
Has Alderney been your main home throughout the whole period?
Do you have strong personal ties to your home in Alderney eg relatives, pets, etc?
Have you consistently been on Alderney more than you have been away throughout the period?
Have you had a pattern of residency that most of the electorate would consider you to be normally on Alderney?
If your answers to any of the above are no, or probably not, you would be advised to contact the Chief Executive before standing. There can then be a discussion on how your residency situation is likely to be regarded in the context of the law and seek to clarify your eligibility to stand.

A candidate needs to be nominated by a proposer and seconder whose names must be on the Electoral Roll.
