Press Release - Hill Climb Event Cancelled 14.09.2021

Motor events cancellation 'regrettable but understandable'

The decision by Guernsey Kart & Motor Club to cancel its hill climb and speed trials events in Alderney is regrettable but understandable.

"We commend them in taking this difficult decision which is clearly the right one in the circumstances," said a States of Alderney spokesperson.

The events, which were to have begun on Thursday and continued over the weekend, are very popular and bring valued visitor business to the island every year.

"We currently have a cluster of Covid-19 cases in the hospital and our healthcare staff and emergency services are under considerable pressure," added the government spokesperson.

The club made its decision following information from Dermot Mullin, Director of Operations at the Office of the Committee for Health and Social Care in Guernsey, that Alderney's already stretched medical and hospital services would not be able to cope if there was a significant incident. The MMH has been managing a Covid-19 outbreak which has impacted on patients and the staff team.

The States of Alderney wishes to express its gratitude and appreciation to the Club and its members for making this event a highlight of our calendar year and extend our appreciation and obvious regret that they have been placed in this position.

The States recognises the enormous amount of hard work, energy and considerable financial commitment that has gone into this event that has unfortunately been cancelled.
