• Alderney Fire, Ambulance and Rescue Service

    During 2020 the island's Fire, Ambulance and Rescue Service transitioned into a combined service and from 2021 the operation was managed by the States of Alderney. From April 2023, St John Ambulance and Rescue Services, Guernsey, operate the Ambulance Service. This service is provided by a permanent on-island staff and clinical governance and management is provided by SJARS.

    The Service responds to 999 calls dispatched through the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre (JESCC) based in Guernsey as well as requests from Police and local Clinicians. The service is free to all Alderney residents and provides a service 24 hours a day, 7 days and 365 days a year for emergencies.

    The services aim to deliver a safe, effective and responsive service to a high sustainable standard. Incorporating continuous improvement and delivering innovative solutions to meet future needs.

    Recruitment, training and retention of quality volunteers and staff is a key component to the delivery of the services. This is supported through investment in training and exercises rolling programmes. This equips the crews to deal with the variety of challenges.

  • Fire & Rescue Service
    The service adheres to local Laws and Ordinances including The Fire Services (Alderney) Law, 2002, as well as following the Bailiwick and UK best practice.

  • The Fire and Rescue Service operates three Firefighting Appliances and one 4x4 Rescue Unit.

  • Non-emergency services are also provided which include fire precaution training, awareness campaigns, fire safety inspections. The service also has prohibition powers in respect of contravention or offenses.

  • Ambulance Service

  • The Ambulance Service is provided by Sy John Ambulance and Rescue Service, Guernsey and currently operates two accident and emergency vehicles and four professional ambulance crew.

    It is a patient-focused quality care service, which provides island wide ambulance service and assisting with patient transfers. These medical evacuation transfers are either by rotary or fixed wing aircraft or on an appropriate vessel by sea. The service also provides non-emergency Patient Transfer Service (PTS) upon a Clinician's request.

    Other available services include public event support, of which fees may apply, event and community safety awareness campaigning.

    As part of the continuous improvement programme, initiatives such as Community First Responders (CFR). CFR are trained members of the community to a provide Basic Life Support (BLS) and use defibrillators enabling a rapid response for a better chance of survival for cardiac arrest patients.

  Police

  • The day-to-day policing of Alderney is provided by three locally based officers. Alderney Police are managed by senior officers in Guernsey who make regular visits to the Island in order to ensure a quality policing service is available to local residents and visitors. Fortunately crime rates within Alderney are relatively low compared to most other jurisdictions and through a community style of policing, officers seek to maintain that level of peace. When more serious incidents do occur Alderney Police are able to call upon support from specialist officers from Guernsey. These officers can arrive in Alderney at very short notice.

  • Alderney Police enjoy good co-operation from the community it serves and with that support the police will aim to continue to provide an efficient and effective service.

• RNLI 

  • Alderney Lifeboat Station provides a base for the 20-strong volunteer crew and their Trent class all-weather lifeboat Roy Barker 1. 

  • The Alderney Lifeboat station was originally established in 1869. It closed in 1884, but was re-established 100 years later in 1984.
